Men wearing hats have always had a great charm and have been celebrated hundreds of times by cinema and art world, because this accessory gives a touch of mystery and elegance to male figure. Fashion designers well known that and, for spring summer 2019, brought on catwalks many models of hats and caps, both retro-look and sporty or modern.
Panama, bomberg or bowler: the coolest hats of summer come from the past
For decades, Hollywood actors fascinated us with their elegant looks, often doing so thanks to a precious accessory, the hat. The retro-look inspired by 50s is one of the main trends of men's fashion for spring summer 2019. That’s why the trendiest fashion houses brought back on catwalks many classic hats, but also some eccentricities inspired by past fashion. The coppola, a flat cap typical of Italian tradition made famous by many iconic films of the 50s, is re-proposed by Dolce & Gabbana and by Doria 1905 in many versions of fabric, especially tartan, stripes and small patterns, perfect for the look of contemporary Dandies. From the 19th century instead, comes the extravagant straw bowler that Thom Browne brings on his catwalk matched to shorts with suspenders. Basque, a typically French-style beret, is exasperated in its proportions by Undercover, which transforms it into a truly cutting-edge accessory. As does Ami Alexandre Mattiussi with his wide-brimmed nylon hats. Prada, for example, wears its models of men's fashion show with strange padded hats equipped with earflaps, which seem coming from Alaska’s icy lands and from the early 1900s, but renews them with highly technological fabrics.
Straw: the favorite material for the most elegant and trendy hats
Under the summer sun, the perfect material to protect against too hot rays keeping cool the body, is straw, which for centuries has been used to make hats of all kinds. The trendiest designers of the moment rediscover this material for its characteristics of lightness and versatility, but especially because it’s perfect for reinterpreting classic models in a contemporary way. Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Saint Laurent reproduce the classic straw Bomberg hat, with a small or wider brim and grosgrain ribbon decoration. The Panama, a model that made the fortune of many iconic accessories brands, is interpreted with funny and lively striped motifs by Paul Smith, with refined colors and paisley motifs silk bandana-effect applications by Etro. But is Borsalino the brand that most of all brought to success this type of model. For spring summer 2019, it proposes new variants, applying bandana foulard, expanding the brim shape or creating fascinating animal prints on the straw.
