Now more than ever, male elegance focuses on details, in the successful matching of accessories and clothing, precious materials and outstanding finishing. The autumn/winter 2016-17 catwalks show super accessorized men’s collections.
Hats and caps are the true protagonists of the runway shows, for a return to the past in the most classic models and with an underground look in youthful pieces. Inspiration goes to the 40s for the narrow brimmed hats by Giorgio Armani, Bottega Veneta, Borsalino and Antonio Marras, while Prada brings out an iconic sailor hat, Yohji Yamamoto and Gucci dust off the 70s wide-brimmed hat. More practical and sporty the baseball caps proposed by Z Zegna, while the beanies are knitted at Missoni, in multicolor wool at Iceberg and Maison Margiela, decorated with the emblem of the brand at Rossignol and Moncler.
Stoles and scarves are very long and become an essential accessory to fence cold off. Those by Etro and Burberry are in jacquard wool, at Alexander McQueen they have maxi sizes and cover the shoulders completely, at Fendi and Moschino they feature multicolor stripes, at Malo are in marine version, while at Michael Kors and Bottega Veneta are in a more minimal and elegant ribbed gray.
Back in vogue the foulards, which are worn instead of the tie at Roberto Cavalli, knotted as in the Old West style at Dolce & Gabbana, have baroque prints at Hermés, floral prints at Gucci and tartan at Salvatore Ferragamo.
The trendiest ties and bow ties proposed by the designers feature different shapes and sizes:
- they are thin and strongly colored by Costume National, in black by Dolce & Gabbana and Dsquared2
- the classic models are matched tone on tone to the outfit at Boglioli and Cerruti
- the most eccentric ones dare dazzling colors at Canali and have fancy prints at Versace
- the bow tie is reserved for evening outfits and is strictly black, as seen on the catwalks of Saint Laurent and Ralph Lauren
Men’s fashion jewellery is particularly interesting this season. Showy or minimal, the jewels are back to being a valuable decorative element of the male look. For sharp looks, you can opt for the earrings with crystals by Man, the military medals necklaces by Valentino Garavani or the punk brooches by Alexander McQueen, while a for more classic one you can go for smaller but still luxurious items, such as those proposed by Burberry Prorsum , Tod’s and Lou Dalton.
Belts see a return of the tan color, in addition to the classic black and dark brown, such as the belts by Tod's, Hermès and Ferragamo. The buckles become the most important detail and so here comes the symbol of Batman on Philipp Plein pieces, the gold color at Ermenegildo Zegna, lines that remind the Wild West and horse riding at Salvatore Ferragamo.
Another classy detail is the glove, that this season becomes an essential item. Warm and sporty versions are in ribbed wool at Versace and Prada, in sheepskin at Dsquared2, leave the fingertips free at Dior and Z Zegna. The most elegant are in burned brown suede, as at Larusmiani, in black leather at Emporio Armani and Berluti or in dark blue at Malo and Balmain.
Wallets and purses are matched with bags for both for prints and leather aspect. At Bally and Gucci they are decorated with colored stripes that recall the emblem of the brand, at Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Valentino and Jimmy Choo are decorated with stars, while Salvatore Ferragamo and Dolce & Gabbana choose more youthful and fun fantasies to renew a classic of male accessories.
