Women's fashion by Gucci

GUCCI
History

Synonymous with glamour and luxury, historic brand Gucci was founded in 1921 by young Guccio Gucci – liftboy in a prestigious London hotel. Fascinated by the elegance of the aristocracy, he established the fashion house upon returning to Florence and specialised in luggage and leather goods.

During the Great War the brand relied on experimental combinations of natural materials - jute, hemp and bamboo – and employed the most advanced production techniques. Worn by many international stars, the iconic ‘Bamboo’ it-bag became an instant success when it launched in 1947.

The brand maintained its prestige after the death of its founder, thanks to his four sons who inherited the company. Under their reign the fashion house introduced its famous clamp-styled moccasin and started to use the increasingly popular Gucci logo as a feature on bags, accessories and clothing.

Gucci’s fame reached stratospheric heights in 1966 when Princess Grace of Monaco visited its store on Via Montenapoleone in Milan. Rodolfo Gucci created a silk scarf especially for the Princess, decorated with exquisite floral motifs designed by Vittorio Accornero. ‘Flora’ was born - a print rich with charm and poetry, which since its creation has been reimagined in different colours and patterns for every new season.

The company went public in the 1980s, but the real turning point came in 1990 when young Texan designer Tom Ford took over the stylistic direction of the women’s line. With his strong and sensual style, he revolutionised the brand’s image, infusing his creations with incomparable luxury and glamour.

From 2007 to 2015 the artistic direction was entrusted to Frida Giannini, a talented Italian designer who imbued the brand with modernity and femininity – focusing her collections on the image of a sensual woman with strong character.

Today Gucci’s creative director is Alessandro Michele, who was previously responsible for the accessories line. With his visionary imagination, cultured inspirations and glamour, Michele continues to surprise every season, combining craftsmanship and design with tradition and innovation.
